Creating your unique path to parenthood

Pregnancy is one of the most incredible experiences that a person can be a part of. And this goes for both men and women. From conception to birth, there’s something remarkable and miraculous about bringing a new life into the world.

However, the reality of conception is that not everyone can easily have a baby on board. This is when using fertility treatments becomes an option. One of them is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) treatment, one of the most commonly used treatments to achieve pregnancy.

What Exactly is IUI?

IUI, also known as artificial insemination or donor insemination, is a process that involves placing healthy sperm into a woman’s uterus through a thin tube. The process must be done by the time the woman is ovulating, so it’s easier for the sperm to get closer to the egg.

To start the process of IUI treatment, your partner or donor must collect a semen sample at home or in the doctor’s office. The sperm will undergo “sperm washing” in preparation for the insemination. This should pull out a concentrated amount of healthy sperm and get rid of chemicals that could cause reactions in the uterus and make it harder to get pregnant.

In which situations might IUI be a recommended fertility treatment?

IUI is recommended for those who are having trouble conceiving through natural means. Note that the fertility rate decreases with age. For women, the ability to get pregnant starts to decline by age 30. Meanwhile, male fertility starts to reduce around age 40 to 45, when sperm quality decreases.

For couples over 35 who had unprotected sex for six months without conceiving, you might be a candidate for IUI. The same goes for couples under 35 having unprotected sex for a year or so.

Who is a Good Candidate for IUI?

Besides couples struggling to get pregnant, IUI can also be an ideal option for individuals who want to become single parents by choice. Single women may pursue pregnancy through IUI using donor sperm.

On the other hand, men with infertility issues can also consider getting an IUI treatment. It’s considered a good option for those with mild factor infertility, such as below-average sperm count, mildly abnormal sperm morphology (shape), or motility problems. IUI may also be used by men who have frozen their sperm before cancer surgery that might affect their fertility.

Further, IUI treatment can be used by same-sex couples with sperm donors. It’s one of the simplest methods to achieve pregnancy as long as one partner meets the basic requirements based on age and tubal patency. Having access to a professional IUI treatment provider like IUI @ Home can also help in achieving a high success rate.

Couples looking to explore IUI fertility treatments usually start with IUI, as well as those who prefer a less invasive process. It’s low-tech, minimally invasive, and less expensive compared to in vitro fertilization (IVF). In some cases, couples begin with IUI before proceeding to IVF (if needed). For others, however, IUI may be the only treatment needed to get pregnant.

What is the Success Rate of IUI?

Success rates often vary depending on the age of the individuals and the infertility issues, if present. Other factors that can have an influence include sperm count and morphology, and fallopian tube patency. Commonly cited success rates range from 10% to 20%. This rate increases for women in their early 30s or younger.

IUI Success Tips

IUI @ homesf

An expert IUI practitioner can determine if the IUI treatment is ideal for you. And if it is, here are some tips to increase IUI success:

01

Practice Healthy Habits

Start with what you can control. You can do your part in ensuring treatment success by taking care of your body. Don’t be too sedentary before the treatment, but make sure to avoid strenuous exercises. Following a healthy diet can also help in optimizing the body for pregnancy.

02

Take Prescribed Supplements

Your IUI practitioner from IUI @ Home can recommend herbs and supplements that may indirectly improve IUI success and improve fertility. Take note of the correct dosage and other reminders when taking them.

03

Don’t Stress Yourself Out

Having realistic expectations before getting an IUI treatment may calm your mind and control anxiety. While waiting for the pregnancy test result, find relaxing activities and try to practice them daily. These may include yoga, walking, knitting, or joining a support group.

04

Stay in Touch with Your Fertility Expert

Reliable IUI service providers like IUI @ Home SF offer pre-conception consultation (including a 3-month communication). This allows you to ask important questions to your fertility expert during the entire treatment procedure. Make sure you understand the medications you’re taking and create a list of activity restrictions or dos and don’ts before the procedure.

The intrauterine insemination (IUI) procedure is generally considered to be a pain-free experience. The procedure involves the insertion of a thin, flexible catheter through the cervix and into the uterus. The sensation is often described as similar to that of a routine pelvic examination or pap smear. The catheter is designed to be gentle and cause minimal discomfort. Additionally, the cervix is naturally more open during ovulation, which can further reduce any potential discomfort during the procedure

Sperm washing time is about 30-60 mins depending on the sperm viscosity. The insertion of washed sperm to cervix is about 5-10 minutes
